Simikot Kailash Trek begings at the airstrip in Simikot, this unique, exciting trek travels through Nepal’s remote western district of Humla, following the Humla Karnali river to the border with Tibet. Travelers will be driven in Landcruisers to the holy Lake Manasarovar and will then be given a rare opportunity to complete the pilgrims’ kora around Mount Kailash.
Mount Kailash is considered to be the holiest mountain in the Himalayas, and is widely recognized as the center of four of the world’s greatest religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Bönpo and Jain. Kailash is perfectly symmetrical, and according to one description of the peak, each of the faces is made from either crystal, ruby, gold, or lapis lazuli. Near the base of the mountain, the Indus, Sutlej, Karnali (a tributary of the Ganges River) and Brahmaputra rivers, four of the most significant rivers of the Indian sub-continent, originate.
The trek around Mount Kailash is approximately 50 kilometres (31 miles) in length and involves crossing one rather high pass at 5600m. The journey will take approximately four days to complete, giving each trekker the time necessary for acclimatisation as well as the opportunity to visit three of the most significant monasteries in the region. Undoubtedly, travelers will encounter a variety of religious pilgrims during their journey! After the kora, trekkers will retrace their steps across the Tibetan plateau and cross the border back into Nepal near the town of Zhangmu.
