Trekking trail to Gokyo Lakes / Gokyo Lakes Trek

Gokyo lakes trek is one of the most desired hiking trail where you will enjoy the awe inspiring view of marvelously colored lakes surrounded by breathtaking majestic Himalayas.

The trek in Gokyo provides an excellent opportunity to see an eyeful view of the Mt. Everest at close range. The sparkling, pristine blue and green waters of the Gokyo Lakes are one of Nepal’s most memorable sights.

The major highlight of Gokyo Lakes Trek includes a hike up to one of the best viewpoint – Gokyo Ri at 5340 meters for enjoying the stunning sunrise view over the world’s towering mountains and the Gokyo valley below us.


Situated inside UNESCO WORLD heritage site: “Sagarmatha national park” , these lakes are the world’s highest freshwater lake system comprising six main lakes, of which Thonak Lake is the largest. The Gokyo Lakes are considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists.

Gokyo Lake Trek

The journey begins from 30 mins fly from ktm to lukla. After arriving Tenjing-Hillary airport , we set off to  Namchebazaar, an exceptional village in spectacular bowl shaped region along with marvelous view of Himalayas of khumbu region, like Ama Dablam ( 6856m), Thamserku (6608m) and vistas of MT Everest. And on the way to maccherma, you will captivated by breathtaking views of himalayas like Cho Oyu , kantega and thamserku. the longest glacier ngozumpa glacier will take your breath away by its stunning beauty.

The trail is full of beautiful scenarios inspired by eye-catching stoned houses and meadows ont the shore of great lake dudh pokhari. The fascinating view of gokyo valley , at first we will observe beautiful longpongo lake, second taboche tsho lake, third lake dudh pokhari, fourth thonak and fifth ngozumpa tscho. the view of wonderful ice edge between Gyachung (2922m) and Cho Oyu located in Khumbu region is one of the main attraction of the trail.

Day 01: Arrival Kathmandu Airport (1300 m/4264 ft)

As soon as your arrival in Kathmandu international airport, our agent will be there to welcome you for your upcoming adventurous tour for Gokyo lakes. You will be provided with best accommodation for the night in Kathmandu. You will get time to rest and overcome from jet lag.

Day 02: Fly to Kathmandu to Lukla airport (2,800 m/9,184 ft) and Trek to Phakding (2,652 m/8,700 ft)

Your first sunrise in Nepal shall bring you the warmth of sunrays flying over the majestic Himalayas and reach the Everest region. the flight is about 30 minutes . As we reach at Edmund-Hillary airport of Lukla, we meet our porter crew that will arrange  our baggage and carry them along the way. Then we begin our journey to Gokyo lakes hiking through Pasang Lhamu gate. We will have lunch at Thado Koshi after walk of few hours and stay at Phakding overnight.

Day 03: Hiking from Phakding to Namche Bazar (3,440 m/11,283 ft)

Our second day of the trek begins after our early meal. Today we will be witnessing the so-called heavenly view of Sagarmatha if weather supports us. From Benkar village, a beautiful scenery of Dudhkoshi River along with Thamserku view will be seen. The trail will be full of astonishing view of rhododendron trees. At Jorsale, we will have lunch and ascend towards Namche bazaar crossing Hillary bridge. Here we will enjoy the Sherpa civilization and observe the cultural and natural vicinity. The whole journey for the day is of about 6, 7 hours.

Day 04: Rest day Namche Bazaar explore Hiking up to Everest view

Although we call today the rest day, we will still do some activities for acclimatization for our upcoming days at higher altitude. We will hike few meters to Sherpa museum , towards the Syanboche airport and finally to hotel Everest  view . We will have our lunch there or we return to our lodge. the view point will give you the best opportunity to observe the spectacular panorama of awe inspiring Himalayas. You will be exploring stunning Namche bazaar during the remaining time of the day. it is the best opportunity to enjoy cultural beauty of Sherpa people. The day is of about 6,7 hours of walk.

Day 05: Hiking up to Dole, beginning of solely Gokyo Lakes trek (4,200 m/ 13,780 ft)

On this day, we separate our trail from the route to Everest  base camp and continue our way to Kyanjuma. The tail goes through verdant forests of rhododendron, juniper and pine trees. In summer, yak grazes around here in pasture lands which is locally known as Kharkas. We will observe beautiful Thumbila and Tawache mountains along with stunning Dudh Koshi river and Imja Khola flowing from mountains and melting glaciers. We will stay in one of the lodges of Dole which is a beautiful village of Sherpa people ,Tongba and Gyele. today we shall walk for about 5,6 hours.

Day 06: Hiking up to Machherma(4,470 m/ 14,663 ft)

Hiking up to maccherma will lead you to stunning panaromic view of majestic mountains Thamserku , Cho Oyu and other Himalayas. The altitude is above 4000 m, so drinking water while ascending is necessary for our body to acclimatize. We begin our journey to lhaberma where we get to see a Luza hamlet. Along the way to Dudh Koshi valley we will be crossing by yak grazing pasture lands. There is a local story that once Yeti was spotted here that took life of Yaks and injured Sherpas too but no such evidence has been found. The day is of about 4-5 hours walk.

Day 07: Machhermo to Gokyo valley (4800 m/15,744 ft)

Today we will reach Gokyo (near 5,000m), one of the best place to enjoy the stunning panoramic view of Himalayas. We will walk by first lake named Longpongo and then to further larger lake Taboche  where Himalayan ducks swim in freezing colored lake. Then passing by longest glacier Ngozumpa, we will reach the third lake Dudh Pokhari. From here, we can enjoy the great sceneries of diverse landscapes and Himalayan settlements of Cholatse and Pangaa from higher elevation. The day is of 5-6 hours walk.

Day 08: Gokyo Valley: Acclimatization Day –4th and 5th Gokyo Lakes Hike

With the mesmerizing views of grand Himalayan peaks like Nuptse, Makalu, Lhotse, Cho-Oyu and Gyachung Kang, today we will acclimatize to higher altitude. From further northern side of glacier moraine, spectacular views of Cho Oyu base camp and largest Ngozumpa glacier is seen. we will gradually ascend up to fifth lake and to the sixth if we have time. it shall be of 5-6 hours walk today.

Day 09: Hike Gokyo Ri (5357 m/17,570 ft) and trek back to Dole

Today we will have fantastic opportunity to capture the stunning scenery of majestic Himalayas of 8000m from the viewpoint of Gokyo Ri. The main key to complete any trek is the acclimatization, to reduce health hazards. We will resume our journey early morning to captivate the breathtaking views of snowcapped mountains including Mt. Everest (8848m), Cho Oyu (8153m), Makalu (8475m), Lhotse (8501m) along with other peaks like Thamserku (6808m) and other surrounding ones. Turquoise colored crystal clear lakes along with the Gokyo villages take us towards Dole via Machhermo. It shall be walking distance from 5 to 6 hours.

Day 10: Trek Dole to Namche Bazzar

Today we will be walking downhill looking behind MT Cho Oyu.  Great waterfalls lie on the trail which is decorated with local Himalayan flora, fauna and rhododendron trees that blooms beautifully during spring. We will still have opportunities to enjoy stunning Himalayas: Amadablam, tawache, thamserku and   other peaks along with far view of Tengboche from Mongla. Then we will descend to Sansa that connects us to the main Everest trail taking us at Namche Bazaar. Here we will take the day off and rest in namche bazaar. the day is of about 5-6 hours walk.

Day 11: Namche Bazaar – Lukla

Today, we roam around Namche bazaar and you can collect some souvenirs out of the various marvelous goods being sold. Crossing Dudhkoshi River over suspension bridge, we will reach at Jorsale. Descending to lower ground levels, the surrounding gets denser and greener. Breathing will get easier as we go down.  Leaving Sagamatha national park gate behind, we will cross Phakding and soon arrive at Lukla after some walk. Then we enjoy the rest of the day realizing that we have completed heavenly trip to Gokyo lake. You now, can look back at the incredible moments you’ve just created there. The days is about of 6-7 hours.

Day 12: Fly Lukla to Kathmandu

In the morning we will take an early flight to ktm from lukla . We will be again enjoying the 30 mins ride flying above the stunning himalayas. You can enjoy the rest of the day exploring the city and enjoy night at Thamel.


Day 13:  Contingency Day

Planning a contingency or an extra day is a smart way to travel especially, at Everest region. Due to unpredictable weather conditions in the Himalayas, flight to Lukla might get delayed or even cancelled for next day departure. Therefore if you plan one extra contingency day, there shall not be any problem in scheduling your international flight back home. If there is no any unforeseen obstruction, you can always enjoy an extended day sightseeing around Kathmandu valley, or choose option that suits you. If you are at Kathmandu, accommodation will be at hotel with meal that includes breakfast.


Day 14: Sightseeing Tour in Kathmandu Valley (Swayambhunath  Boudhanath & Pashupatinath Temple & patan durbar square and overnight at Kathmandu.

Any tour to Nepal is incomplete without the valley sightseeing. So today we take a quick visit around UNESCO world heritage sites around Kathmandu valley. From taking a short hike to Swoyambhunath Stupa hill to strolling around Kathmandu durbar square. Then we drive to Boudhanath stupa and nearby Pashupatinath temple. We will be exploring Buddhism, Hinduism religious activities along with cultural and traditional attractions.

Day 15: Morning Breakfast, Departure transfer to Kathmandu Airport

Today is the completion of your 15 days trek to Gokyo Lakes. You can enjoy your breakfast. After that, you will be assisted to international airport of Kathmandu 3 hours prior to your scheduled flight. With warm farewell, we will bid you a goodbye and hope to see you again soon with an adventurous spirit.
