Nagarkot is a calm and picturesque hilltop which is about 32 km east of Kathmandu and is at an altitude of a whooping 2100m. It is a famous destination for viewing the Sunrise and Sunset. This place is very famous for viewing mountains, Panoramic view of Himalayas ranging from Dhaulagiri in the west to Kanchenjunga in the east including Mt Everest can be seen. Langtang, Lakpa, Gaurishankar and Dorje ranges are also the mountain ranges that can be seen from the hilltop. The view of Kathmandu valley seen from Nagarkot is also splendid.
The journey to Nagarkot can be begun by taking a local bus or Private car from Kathmandu to the local town Sankhu. Nagarkot hiking offers exotic sensation of being close to nature, the spectacular view of mountain scenery along with the charming lifestyle and culture of villages of Kathmandu Valley. It will be amazing to see that the local people still exhibit their traditional countryside way of life even though they are so close to city. The hike starts from Sankhu .The uphill trek through scattered villages, forests and farmlands lasting for around four hours will lead you to the Nagarkot in the early afternoon. Further hiking can be done from Nagarkot to changunarayan through a woody ridgeline with an excellent view of mountain. Changunarayan is Nepal’s oldest living monument which was established back in the 5th century and also enlisted in UNESCO world heritage site.
